⛄Let’s talk Sask things, shall we?

Happy Mothers' Day!

Happy Thursday, Saskatchewanians!

cooters could soon be street-legal in Saskatoon—your own, not just rentals. A city report recommends letting residents zip around on private e-scooters, as long as you're 16, helmeted, and under 24 km/h.

Bike lanes, trails, and low-speed roads are in. Sidewalks, bus zones, and skate parks? Still a no-go.

The city's on board. Now it's up to the committee.

🌾Canola Dreams on Ice? Viterra’s Crusher Plan in Limbo

Viterra’s proposed canola crush plant in Regina was supposed to boost jobs and value-added processing in Saskatchewan. But after U.S. giant Bunge’s multibillion-dollar takeover, the project is “unlikely to proceed,” according to a March 2025 U.S. agriculture report.

The delay stings. Canola is one of Saskatchewan’s top exports, and local processing was seen as a buffer against China’s 100% tariffs and shifting global demand. The province says it still hopes the project moves forward—but headwinds like trade tensions, political uncertainty, and rising costs are giving investors pause.

The Viterra-Bunge merger still needs final approval. Until then, hopes for new jobs and regional economic growth hang in the balance.

Fewer jobs. Lower crush capacity. More export risk. This one’s a hit to the wallet.

🌾 Cameco: Rising Strong, But Eyes on U.S. Trade Probe

Saskatoon-based Cameco beat expectations this quarter with $70M in adjusted earnings—despite a dip in uranium revenue tied to Kazakhstan disruptions. The uranium giant remains confident: 18M pounds of production are still on track in Saskatchewan, and exploration spending is up.

But there’s a new wrinkle. The U.S. has launched an investigation into its dependence on foreign critical minerals, including uranium. CEO Tim Gitzel says the last probe under Trump passed without penalties—but today’s trade landscape looks different. A tariff shake-up could rattle markets and cross-border supply chains.

Still, analysts say Cameco is positioned to ride out the uncertainty, thanks to strong uranium prices and long-term deals with utilities. The nuclear industry is heating up—10 new builds in China, and the World Bank is backing nuclear again.

Boom or bump? That depends on how the U.S. decides to play it.
